Paving a Rebuilt Bay Town
Asphalt paving in Bay St. Louis serves the county seat of Hancock County, a city that sits right where Katrina made its final landfall. On August 29, 2005, the storm came ashore just west of the city at the mouth of the Pearl River, with a 28-foot surge and a storm tide of more than 30 feet. Much of the town was rebuilt afterward, and many of those driveways are now old enough to need sealing, resurfacing or repair.
The ridge
USGS maps show a 25-foot elevation contour along a ridge on the city's western edge, along the former route of Highway 90, and that ridge was spared Katrina's surge. Homes on high ground like that tend to have older driveways that were never rebuilt, while lower areas have newer ones. On older drives we see broken edges, potholes and alligator cracking; on newer ones, mostly fading and surface cracks.
Raised homes
Many homes rebuilt in lower areas sit on piers or raised foundations, with parking under the house. We pave those pads so water drains out from under the house, and we keep the slope to the street gentle enough for low cars.
Second homes
The 2020 census counted 9,284 residents with a median age of 48.6, and 5,447 housing units, 22.0% of them vacant, a sign of how many second and seasonal homes are here. If you are not in town full time, we can review the work by phone and photos, send a written estimate, do the job while you are away and send pictures when it is finished.
Highway 603 and U.S. 90
Mississippi Highway 603 runs along the western city limits between U.S. 90 and I-10 Exit 13, and U.S. 90 crosses the bay on the bridge rebuilt after Katrina, which received America's Transportation Award. Both are state highways, so a new or changed driveway connection on them needs a Mississippi Department of Transportation permit. Businesses along these roads often need a commercial entrance planned with drainage and the permit together.
Older drives on higher ground
On the ridge and in other parts of town that kept their older homes, some driveways have been patched for decades. When patches cover most of the surface, a full rebuild usually costs less over time than continuing to patch. We show you where the base has failed and price both choices.
Small business lots
Shops, restaurants and offices around the city have small lots that wear quickly at entrances. We patch, overlay, sealcoat and stripe, and work early or in sections so you can stay open.

Bay St. Louis Questions
Can you pave under my raised home?
Yes. We slope the pad so water drains out from under the house and keep the transition to the street drivable.
I only live here part of the year. Can you work while I am away?
Yes. We can review the site by phone and photos, send a written estimate and send photos when the work is done.
My post-Katrina driveway is fading and cracking. What now?
If the base is firm, crack filling and a sealcoat, or an overlay, can add years. We check the base first.
Do I need MDOT approval for an entrance on Highway 603?
Yes. Highway 603 is a state highway, so a new or changed connection needs an MDOT permit.
Do you also work in Diamondhead and Kiln?
Yes, and in the rest of Hancock County.
My old driveway is mostly patches. Should I keep patching?
When patches cover much of the drive, a rebuild is usually the better value. We check the base and price both options so you can decide.
