Fixing the Cause, Not Just the Hole

Asphalt repair is usually the right first step when a Biloxi driveway or lot starts breaking up in spots. Pavement that is solid across most of its area does not need to be replaced because of a few failures. Those areas need to be cut out, the wet or weak base below them dug out and rebuilt, and fresh hot mix compacted in. A repair done that way can last as long as the pavement around it. Cold patch shoveled into a puddle rarely makes it through the next rainy month.

Why asphalt fails in patches on the coast

Almost every local failure starts with water. A downspout that empties onto the pavement, a low spot that ponds after storms, or an open crack that has been letting water in for a few years will soften the base below. Once that happens, the asphalt above bends under traffic until it breaks into a pothole or a patch of alligator cracking. Edges fail when the soil beside them washes away or stays soft, leaving the asphalt unsupported.

How we repair

Saw-cut patching

We cut a square-edged area around the damage, extending past the cracking into sound pavement, and remove the broken asphalt. Wet base is dug out and replaced with compacted stone. The cut edges get a tack coat, and hot mix is placed and rolled flush with the surrounding surface. This is the standard repair for potholes and alligator-cracked sections.

Edge repair

Crumbling edges are cut back to solid asphalt, the base is widened and compacted, new asphalt is placed, and soil is packed against the edge so it has support. If runoff caused the damage, we show you how to redirect it.

Crack sealing

Cracks wider than a hairline are cleaned out and filled with hot rubberized sealant. Keeping water out of the base is the cheapest way to prevent the next pothole.

Settled trenches and aprons

Trenches cut for water, sewer or other utilities often settle over time. We bring the trench back up with compacted stone and patch it. Sunken street aprons get the same treatment, and work at the street edge may need a city excavation permit.

Storm damage

After a tropical storm or a long stretch of heavy rain, pavement that sat under water can come out with soft spots, washed-out edges and debris packed into cracks. We check how far the damage goes, patch what can be patched and tell you plainly if a section needs more than a repair.

Repair, resurface or replace

If failures are scattered and the rest of the surface is firm, repair is the right call. If the whole surface is worn and cracked but still well supported, an overlay may be the better value. If failures cover most of the area, replacement usually makes more sense. We tell you which group your pavement falls into and why.

Timing

Hot-mix repairs need a dry base. Winters in Biloxi are mild, so repairs can be done most of the year, scheduled around rain. Cold patch is a stopgap for emergencies, and we tell you when that is what you are getting.

Asphalt Repair Questions

Why does the same pothole keep coming back?

Because the base under it is still wet or weak. Filling the hole without removing the failed material leaves the cause in place. Saw-cut patching with base repair fixes it.

How much does asphalt repair cost?

HomeGuide puts the average asphalt repair at $250 to $800 nationally, with pothole filling at $100 to $400 and saw-cut patching at $4 to $12 per square foot. The number and size of repair areas and the base work needed set your price.

Is cold patch a real fix?

It is a temporary one. Cold patch holds until hot mix can be placed, which makes it useful in an emergency, but it rarely lasts as a permanent repair, especially in wet weather.

Can you repair and sealcoat at the same time?

Yes. We repair first, seal the cracks, and sealcoat once the patches are ready so the surface looks even. Grouping work into one visit also makes better use of the minimum service fee.
