Driveways in Bayou Country
Asphalt paving in Kiln means working in river and bayou country. Kiln is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Hancock County, and locals call it "the Kiln," with the n silent. The Jourdan River borders it to the south, Bayou Talla runs through the southern part into the Jourdan, Bayou Coco lies to the southeast and Bayou La Terre to the east. With that much water around, drainage decides whether a driveway lasts.
Named for the old kilns
The name comes from the kilns that once produced tar and other naval stores for the timber industry, and by 1913 it was firmly established. Pine woods still cover much of the area, and many homes sit on wooded lots with long drives. Pine roots and needles along the edges are a constant maintenance issue, and shaded asphalt stays wet longer.
Growth from the coast
Kiln's population went from 1,262 in 1990 to 2,040 in 2000, a jump of about 62% during the years the casino industry grew on the coast, and it counted 2,224 people in 2020. Housing units went from 987 in 2010 to 1,085 in 2020, with 18.5% vacant. Many homes from the 1990s growth are on drives that are now 25 to 30 years old, a common age for full replacement when the base has worn out.
Floodwater and rebuilt drives
Katrina made landfall on the coast on August 29, 2005, and parts of the Kiln saw at least 30 feet of floodwater. Some driveways were rebuilt over bases that had been soaked and disturbed. If your drive has settled or cracks in the same spots after every wet season, we check the base before recommending a patch or overlay.
Highways 43 and 603
Mississippi Highways 43 and 603 run together as the main road through Kiln and continue 4 miles south to I-10 at Exit 13. Highway 43 heads northwest toward Picayune and Highway 603 north toward Necaise. Driveways connecting to these state highways need a Mississippi Department of Transportation permit, and the state requires any culvert under the drive to meet its design criteria. We include that in the plan.
Wet seasons and scheduling
With bayous on several sides, ground in the Kiln can stay wet for days after heavy rain. We do not pave over a saturated base. If a storm comes through before your job, we wait for the base to firm up, which protects the work you are paying for.
Gravel conversions
Many Kiln drives are gravel. We regrade and compact firm gravel as a base, dig out soft spots and pave, and we look at every ditch crossing to make sure the culvert can carry the water.

Kiln Questions
Do I need a permit for a driveway on Highway 603 or 43?
Yes. Both are state highways, so a new or changed connection needs an MDOT permit. We handle it as part of the job.
My lot is near the river. Can I still have asphalt?
Yes, with a well-built base. We remove soft soil, build up compacted stone and grade the drive to shed water.
My drive is from the 1990s. Repair or replace?
If the base is firm, crack sealing and patching or an overlay can work. If it has settled and broken up, replacement lasts longer.
Do you replace culverts under driveways?
Yes. If the pipe is crushed or too small, we replace it when we pave.
Do you serve Diamondhead and Bay St. Louis?
Yes, along with the rest of Hancock County.
Why did you delay my job after a storm?
Paving over a saturated base traps water under the asphalt and shortens its life. We wait until the base is firm enough to compact properly.
