Driveways in an Old Resort Community
Asphalt paving in Gulf Hills means working in a neighborhood that was laid out as a resort a century ago. The state of Mississippi issued Gulf Hills its charter of incorporation on September 15, 1925, and the resort opened in January 1927, billed as the golf city of the Gulf Coast. It covered 667 acres, with 249 acres of fairways, parks and waterways and about 10 miles of roads, some along the waterfront and some on the golf course. Elvis Presley and Judy Garland were among the visitors. Those winding roads and irregular lots still shape the driveways we pave here.
Long, curving drives
Resort-era lot layouts mean many Gulf Hills homes sit back from the road on curving drives, some running along the water and some along the course. Curves wear more than straight runs because tires scrub as they turn. On a replacement, we build the curves with a solid base and full compaction and keep the edges supported so they do not break off into the lawn.
Trees and shade
Gulf Hills is heavily wooded, and many driveways run under pines and oaks. Roots lift asphalt, and shade keeps the surface damp long after rain, which feeds moss and softens edges. We repair root damage by removing the lifted section and rebuilding without cutting large structural roots where we can avoid it, and we recommend keeping pine straw and leaves swept off the edges.
A neighborhood that filled in slowly
The Depression slowed development, and by the end of World War II Gulf Hills had only 40 homes. Most houses came later, built over many decades, so driveways here range from very old to nearly new. The 2020 census counted 8,526 residents, up 19.3% from 2010, and 3,571 housing units, with 6.4% vacant. For the older drives we usually see a choice between resurfacing and full replacement; for newer ones, sealing and crack filling are the right first steps.
Near the water
Gulf Hills borders Ocean Springs to the south and sits on low ground near the water at about 13 feet of elevation. Waterfront lots have soil that stays wet. We pay close attention to drainage on those properties, grading drives to shed water and building the base up where the ground is soft.
Golf-course and waterfront edges
Where a driveway runs next to a fairway, a canal or a seawall, there is little room for equipment and no room for mistakes. We plan the access route, protect turf and edges, and use smaller equipment where needed.
Unincorporated, county roads
Although it was chartered in 1925, Gulf Hills today is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Jackson County, just south of I-10, with St. Martin to the west and Latimer to the north. Road connections are handled by the county, and we confirm what applies before changing an apron.

Gulf Hills Questions
My curving driveway is crumbling at the edges. Can that be fixed?
Yes. We cut back to solid asphalt, rebuild and compact the base along the edge, and repave so the edge is supported.
Pine roots are lifting my drive. What are my options?
We can cut out the damaged section and rebuild it, avoiding large roots where possible. If roots run under the whole drive, a thicker base or a small reroute may last longer.
My drive is very old. Resurface or replace?
If the base is firm, resurfacing can work. If there are ruts, soft spots or many broken pieces, replacement lasts much longer. We check the base first.
Do you work on waterfront lots?
Yes. We grade for drainage and build up the base where the ground stays wet.
Is Gulf Hills part of Ocean Springs?
No. It borders Ocean Springs but is an unincorporated community in Jackson County, so road connections are handled by the county.
Can you work next to my seawall or the golf course?
Yes. We plan the access route, protect the edges and turf, and use smaller equipment close to the water or the course.
