From Radish Fields to Neighborhood Streets
Asphalt paving in Long Beach serves a city that started as farm country. After logging cleared the yellow pine forests, Long Beach planted row crops and called itself the Radish Capital of the World; in 1921 a bumper crop sent more than 300 trainloads of Long Red radishes north. The city incorporated on August 10, 1905. Today it is mostly residential, with 16,780 people and 7,348 housing units counted in 2020, and most of our work here is on home driveways.
Streets the city repaved
In 2017 Long Beach repaved 62 roads totaling 10.9 miles, including Alverado Drive, Pecan Park, Pecan Circle, parts of South Forest and South Mitchell Road, using money it received for Katrina recovery. When the street in front of a house is repaved, the old driveway apron is often left lower or more broken than the new surface. We cut the apron back to sound pavement, rebuild the base and pave it to meet the street flush.
Older driveways on flat ground
Long Beach is flat, with a listed elevation of about 26 feet, and many of its neighborhoods have driveways from the 1960s through the 1990s. Flat drives have one weakness: water has nowhere to go. We look for birdbaths, the shallow puddles that sit for a day after rain, and either level them with a patch or regrade the drive with enough slope to drain. On a full replacement we also check that the garage end is higher than the street end.
Near the beach
Katrina destroyed most buildings close to the Long Beach shoreline on August 29, 2005, and many homes south of the railroad were rebuilt, some on raised foundations. Driveways for raised homes often have a parking pad under the house and a short, steep run to the street. We pave those so the slope is drivable and water runs out from under the house rather than toward it.
The university and small lots
The University of Southern Mississippi's 52-acre Gulf Park campus sits on East Beach Boulevard in Long Beach. Around it and along the main roads are churches, offices and small businesses with lots that need regular care. We do pothole and full-depth repairs, sealcoating, and restriping with correct accessible spaces.
Driveways for boats and trailers
If you keep a boat or trailer at home in Long Beach, plan for it when you pave. Trailers parked in one spot and turned on the jack wheel leave dents in soft asphalt. We build a thicker section where trailers park and suggest a jack pad to spread the load.
Maintenance pays here
Salt air, sun and frequent rain all age asphalt. Sealing cracks each year and sealcoating every few years costs far less than replacing a drive early.

Long Beach Questions
Water puddles on my flat driveway. Can that be fixed?
Yes. Small low spots can be leveled with a patch. If the whole drive lacks slope, regrading and repaving gives water a path off the surface.
Can you pave the area under my raised house?
Yes. We pave the pad and the run to the street, sloping it so water drains away from the house and the transition stays drivable.
My apron is lower than the new street. What do you do?
We cut the apron back to sound asphalt, rebuild and compact the base, and pave it level with the street so the joint seals.
How long does sealcoat need before I can drive on it?
Usually about a day, depending on heat and humidity. We tell you exactly when it is ready and block the drive until then.
Do you stripe church and business lots?
Yes. We restripe stalls, arrows and accessible spaces after sealcoating or on their own.
Will my boat trailer dent the new asphalt?
In the first summer, a jack wheel left in one spot can dent fresh asphalt. A thicker section where the trailer parks and a pad under the jack prevent most of it.
