Paving in Rural Jackson County
Asphalt paving in Vancleave covers a lot of country. Vancleave is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in central Jackson County, about 19 miles northeast of Biloxi and 18 miles northwest of Pascagoula. The CDP covers about 44 square miles, and the 2020 census counted only about 130 people per square mile. Homes sit on large lots, often well back from the road, and the driveways are long, rural and exposed to plenty of rain.
Along Highway 57
The original hamlet of Vancleave grew up along Mississippi Highway 57, and the CDP extends north to Highway 614, the Wade-Vancleave Road. Both are state highways. A new or relocated driveway connecting to them needs a Mississippi Department of Transportation driveway permit, any pipe culvert under the drive must meet MDOT's design criteria, and the permit is void if the work is not finished within a year. If you are building a home or a shop on one of these roads, we plan the entrance and permit together.
Rural driveways
Many Vancleave drives began as dirt or gravel. Converting to asphalt starts with a solid base: we remove soft or organic soil, bring in crushed stone, compact it and pave. On long drives we can pave the part closest to the house first, or pave a narrower lane with stone shoulders, to fit the budget. We also look at the low spots along the drive, where water crosses, since that is where rural asphalt fails first.
Shops, equipment and trailers
Larger properties often have shops, boats, campers or equipment. A drive that carries trailers or a heavy truck needs more base and thicker asphalt than one used only by cars, especially at turns and at the parking pad. Tell us what will use the drive and we will build the section for it.
Growth over twenty years
The 2000 census counted 1,764 housing units in Vancleave, and the 2020 census counted 2,291, with 11.7% vacant. Population rose from 4,910 in 2000 to 5,886 in 2010 before settling at 5,592 in 2020. Many of the homes built in that period have drives that are now ready for crack sealing, sealcoating or a first coat of asphalt.
Low crossings
On long rural drives, the weakest spot is usually where the drive dips through a low area that carries water after storms. We raise those sections with more base, add a culvert where water needs to pass under, and pave them thicker so they do not wash out.
Before digging
Rural properties often have buried water lines, septic lines and power runs near the drive. Besides MS811 locates, which Mississippi requires at least two working days before excavation, we ask you where private lines run so we do not damage them.

Vancleave Questions
Do I need a permit for a driveway on Highway 57?
Yes. Highway 57 is a state highway, so a new or changed driveway connection needs an MDOT permit. We handle it with the job.
Can you pave a long rural driveway in stages?
Yes. Many owners pave near the house first and extend later, or pave a narrower lane with stone shoulders.
Will asphalt hold up to my trailer and truck?
It will if it is built for that load. We use a deeper base and thicker asphalt at turns and parking areas.
What about my septic and water lines?
MS811 marks public utilities, but not private lines. We ask you to show us septic and private lines so we can work around them.
Do you serve Wade and Hurley?
Yes, along with the rest of central and northern Jackson County.
Part of my driveway floods after storms. Can that be fixed?
Yes. We raise the low section with more base and, where water needs to cross, install a culvert so it passes under the drive.
