Driveways in Pine Country
Asphalt paving in Saucier serves a small, rural community well inland from the beach. Saucier is a census-designated place in central Harrison County, part of the Gulfport-Biloxi metro area, with 1,077 residents and 429 households counted in 2020. Its elevation of 161 feet is far above the coast, and the land is pine country with homes on bigger lots and long, private drives.
Railroad roots
Saucier started as a stop on the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad, which got a money order post office and express office in 1893. By 1900 the hamlet had about 110 people, a sawmill, a drugstore and five general stores. The rail line is now part of the Canadian Pacific Kansas City system. During World War II, Axis prisoners were held at a camp in Saucier. The community has stayed small, which is why most of our work here is on single driveways, not subdivisions.
Higher ground, different problems
Being well above sea level means Saucier does not deal with storm surge or tidal flooding. The problems are different: long drives where rain runs down tire ruts, loose soil at the edges that shifts when it is not confined, and pine roots and needles along the edges. We build drives with a compacted stone base, firm shoulders and a cross slope so water leaves the surface instead of running down it.
From gravel to paved
Many Saucier drives are gravel or dirt. When gravel is thick and firm, it becomes the base for new asphalt after regrading and compaction. Where it has been churned into the soil, we dig out and rebuild. On longer drives we can pave in phases, pave only the steep or rutted sections first, or pave a single lane with stone shoulders.
Culverts and ditches
Country roads in Harrison County drain through roadside ditches, and most drives cross a ditch on a culvert. An undersized or crushed pipe backs water up over the drive. We check the crossing on every project and can replace the pipe and rebuild the approach so the most important part of the drive does not wash out.
Shops and farm traffic
Many Saucier properties have a shop, a barn or equipment that uses the same drive as the family car. Tractors, trailers and delivery trucks need a stronger section than cars. Tell us what uses the drive and we will build the base and thickness for it.
Getting it scheduled
Rural jobs take a little more planning: access for trucks, a place to stage material, and locates for public utilities through MS811 at least two working days before we dig. We ask about private wells, septic and buried power runs as well.

Saucier Questions
Is it worth paving a long gravel driveway in Saucier?
For many owners, yes. Asphalt ends washouts, ruts and loose stone. We can pave in phases or pave a narrower lane to fit the budget.
Rain cuts ruts in my driveway. Will asphalt stop that?
Yes, if it is built with a cross slope and firm shoulders so water leaves the surface. We design for that on every sloped drive.
Do you replace driveway culverts?
Yes. We check the ditch crossing and can replace a crushed or undersized pipe when we pave.
Why do the edges of country driveways break off?
Loose soil along an unsupported edge lets the asphalt bend and crack when tires roll off it. A compacted stone base that extends past the edge, plus firm shoulders, keeps the drive stable.
Do you serve Lyman and the rest of north Harrison County?
Yes, including Lyman and the rest of north Harrison County.
Will asphalt hold up to a tractor or delivery truck?
It will if it is built for the load. We use a deeper stone base and thicker asphalt where heavy vehicles turn, stop and park.
